“AI isn’t relevant to my business.” Four in ten small firms say so. Here’s where AI for small business fits.

Four in ten small Canadian firms tell Statistics Canada that AI is not relevant to them. Here is what the data says, what is really holding firms back, and three everyday places AI fits in a small business.

AI for small business in a small business

Statistics Canada asked businesses whether they use artificial intelligence. Among firms with 1 to 4 employees, 41.4% said AI isn’t relevant to them. Among firms with 5 to 19 employees, the answer was almost identical: 41.0%.

We think that answer deserves a closer look.

AI use is growing fast, from a small base

In the second quarter of 2026, 19.2% of Canadian businesses reported using AI to produce goods or deliver services over the previous 12 months, according to Statistics Canada. That has tripled since the second quarter of 2024, when it was 6.1%. The smallest firms, those with 1 to 4 employees, are right in line at 19.9%.

Other surveys count differently and land much higher. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce reported in August 2025 that 58% of U.S. small businesses say they use generative AI, up from 40% in 2024. That counts any use at all, including asking a chatbot to draft an email.

Both can be true at once. Plenty of owners have tried AI. Far fewer have built it into how the business actually runs. In a March 2026 Goldman Sachs survey of small businesses, 76% reported using AI, but only 14% said it was fully embedded in their core operations.

Tools alone don’t move the needle

Here is the most useful finding we came across, and it comes from Statistics Canada’s own researchers. In an April 2026 study, AI adopters at first looked 16.8% more productive than non-adopters. But once the researchers accounted for what those firms already had in place, like cloud tools, data analytics and R&D, “the association between AI adoption and productivity falls to 5.1% and becomes statistically insignificant.”

In plain terms: buying an AI tool doesn’t make a business more productive on its own. The payoff comes from putting it to work inside a real, well-understood process.

So where does AI fit in a small business?

When owners tell us AI isn’t relevant, what we usually hear underneath is “nobody has shown me where it fits in my week.” So here are three places it almost always fits in a small business:

  • Paperwork that arrives by email. Invoices, receipts and order forms read, checked and entered into your accounting or order system, instead of re-typed by hand.
  • Follow-ups that slip. Quotes that went out last week and never got a reply, flagged and drafted for a person to review and send.
  • Scheduling and repeat questions. The same ten customer questions answered consistently, and bookings that don’t need three emails back and forth.

None of these is glamorous. That’s the point. Among Canadian businesses already using AI, the most common use Statistics Canada found was data analytics (36.6%): making sense of information the business already has.

What’s actually holding firms back

After “not relevant,” the barriers Statistics Canada found most often were cybersecurity or privacy concerns (13.4%) and cost (10.6%). Both are fair. Before adopting any AI tool, ask three questions: Where is our data stored? Who can see it? What happens to it if we stop using the tool?

As Khari Parker, co-founder of Connie’s Chicken and Waffles in Baltimore, told Goldman Sachs: “AI is already helping small businesses compete, save time, and better serve customers — but many of us are still figuring out how to use it effectively.”

Start with one process

You don’t need an AI strategy. You need one process that eats your team’s week, a clear picture of how it works today, and a way to measure the hours you get back. Then do the next one.

That’s how we work at HME Solutions: we find the one painful process first, build a custom AI tool around the way your business already works, and track the results that matter to you. Big-company tools, small-business prices.

If you had to pick one process in your business that AI could take off your plate, what would it be?

Frequently asked questions

Where does AI fit in a small business?

Three places it almost always fits: paperwork that arrives by email, follow-ups that slip, and scheduling and repeat customer questions. None is glamorous, and that is the point.

Does buying an AI tool make a business more productive?

Not on its own. A Statistics Canada study found the apparent productivity gap shrinks to 5.1% and becomes statistically insignificant once existing cloud tools, analytics and R&D are accounted for. The payoff comes from applying AI inside a well-understood process.
